A social view of the mental health: present perceptions about stigma

Abstract:
ABSTRACT This paper is part of a wider cualitative work on the present perceptions about mental health and with special emphasis on the social stigma - area of Tarragona, Spain. By conducting semi-structured interviews to three focus groups and with the experience illustrated of the participants, we approached the social knowledge about mental health and the ideas that underpin prejudices that generate stigma on people with mental illness. The speeches of the informants own results showing support needs to be informed and a change of health, education and community system as strategies to combat stigma.
