A decrease in liver carnitine concentration has an unfavorable effect on NAFLD

  • Identification data

    Identifier:  TFG:4649
    Authors:  Pinto Caparrós, Laura
    Abstract:
Background: NAFLD starts with simple inflammation up to a more severe form such as non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), in which other clinical signs are found with mitochondrial dysfunction. Carnitines, have been linked to the progression of NAFLD as well as the degree of NASH. Objectives: We investigated the difference patients with NASH and without NASH by measuring carnitine concentrations in plasma and liver. Results: Comparison of carnitine concentrations in liver of NASH patients with Non-NASH patients revealed that carnitine concentrations were found to be decreased in NASH. Conclusions: Beta-oxidation, mitochondrial mitophagy and apoptosis appear to be altered as the disease progresses.
