Abstract:
Abstract Main Objective: Identify key aspects of the primary caregiver of patients with schizophrenia. Methodology: an update on the load of the primary caregiver of patients with schizophrenia by electronic search of articles published between 2004 and 2014 databases IBECS, I-Cercador Plus, Dialnet, Cochrane, Cuidatge, Cuiden, Mesh, PubMed literature review and Medes. Main Results: In Spain over 80% of people with schizophrenia live by informal caregivers. High levels of burden on primary caregivers that diminish the quality of life, social support and family functioning. Conclusions: The main stress factors are the social, cultural and economic context. Family Objective and Subjective Burden Interview (ECFOS-II) is a reliable and validated to quantify the charge levels of the primary caregiver tool. Psychoeducational programs decrease the level of burden on caregivers. Keywords: schizophrenia, caregiver, burden, family.
