Abstract:
ABSTRACT Background and aims: In Catalonia, sudden cardiac death causes roughly 3500 deaths every year. The implantable cardioverter defibrillators are the treatment of choice to prevent sudden death. For it, we strive to find out what the daily habits of the people who take it implanted are, as well as to see how it influences in their families and how the relations were with the professionals who attended to them. Material and Methods: A qualitative and phenomenological study. Data collection was conducted through semi-structured interviews using three volunteers, part of a group called “Orgullo DAI”. The analysis of the information was carried out through the offer from Van Manen. Results: The interviews of three participants were analysed, sociodemographic information was obtained and four topics and thirteen subtopics were identified. The main topics are: Experience with the implantable cardioverter defibrillator, health professionals, search for information on their own and future prospects. Conclusions: It can be concluded that the patients with implantable cardioverter defibrillators can have completely a normal lives, without having to make changes or feeling different to others. In addition, thanks to the interviews, we can verify that it is integrated into clinical practice and that nurses are responsible for carrying out the assessment and monitoring once the patient is discharged.
