Abstract:
ABSTRACT: Introduction: Every year around 15 million children are born preterm, with prematurity being the first death’s cause on newborn. Three out of four of these deaths can be prevented with interventions like the Kangaroo Care method, which consists in attending said preemies keeping them in a skin-to-skin contact with their mother/father. Due of their knowledge, competency and their close contact with patients, nurses are the most suitable in order to promote that method. Objectives: To let know which is nursery’s role in front of the Kangaroo Care Method in preterm newborn and/or infants born with low weight, describing their benefits, expose the method’s value in motherchild and father-child link, and become acquainted about the current situation in Spain. Method: Bibliographic revision using Cuiden, Scielo, Pubmed and Dialnet databases. Selection criteria included articles published in the last 5 years, written in Spanish and English, with exclusive theme of the keywords used. Results: An analysis of 21 articles was done, based on the following subjects: the preterm newborn and/or infants born with low weight; Definition, history and realization of the Kangaroo Care method; Kangaroo Care method’s benefits; Advantages of the Kangaroo Care method in front of incubators and nursery’s role in said method. Limitations: Multiple benefits of the Kangaroo Care method are known, nevertheless research about it have diminished over the last years. Conclusions: Articles published talk mainly about mother’s role, letting father’s role in a secondary plane. It has been proven that nursery is the main promotion for the method, nonetheless there’s a low number of present articles that report its exact functions and the activities it must perform.
