    Abstract:
Objective: To explore the bases of the multisensory stimulation therapy or Snoezelen, delving into its effect on elderly people with dementia. Methodology: On the basis of recommendations made by the PRISMA working group, an electronic search in databases, catalogs and national and international magazines, as well as in web pages, was conducted between September 2015 and April 2016, without limitation of publication year, in Spanish and English. Publications that did not focus on the subject were excluded, as well as the ones that had to be paid, and those that were not available in full text. Results: 22 publications were selected to do this review. Snoezelen was created in the Netherlands in the 1970s, and its aim is to stimulate all five senses to provide wellness, relax and leisure. It can be applied into fields such as intellectual disability, injury and cerebral palsy, mental illness, the elderly, chronic pain or even postpartum women. In elderly patients with dementia, positive effects have been observed on verbal and nonverbal communication, aggressive behavior and anxiety, affection and interaction, relaxation and stress level and general welfare, among others. The therapy is carried out in specially-conditioned rooms with materials that allow doing different exercises depending on what you want to stimulate. Conclusions: The multisensory stimulation (Snoezelen) provides positive effects in aspects like communication, behaviour and relaxation in elderly people with dementia, but no negative effect. Hardly any national studies have been observed, so more research is necessary to support its effectiveness. It hasn’t been found information that relates it to nursing either, where its knowledge could be introduced with briefings and/or workshops.
