Abstract:
This work is the result of research in art history with a qualitative methodology. The object of study is a school architecture from Tarragona, currently called the Escola Torreforta, and in its beginnings the Gual Villalbí School Group, 1957-1960. In the investigation, an approach to the work and its architect is made. The building is analyzed from its historical, artistic, social and educational context, taking into account basically different primary sources, since there is no previous study. The construction is related to other architectures from the same period and of special relevance in Tarragona. Furthermore, the figure of Joan Zaragoza Albi (Tarragona, 1912-2006), who designed the Escola Torreforta, and who has an extensive professional career in the mid-20th century in Tarragona, is rescued from oblivion. Joan Zaragoza is part of the generation of Catalan architects who put themselves at the service of the architectural renewal of their time, from the end of the 19th century to approximately the middle of the 20th century. In the work, a biographical journey is made, until now unknown, which is partly nourished by the testimony of some family members and colleagues
