Down Syndrome and Hypotonia

    Abstract:
Trisomy 21, or Down syndrome (DS), is a genetic disorder that affects various body systems, with muscle hypotonia being common. This latter interferes with postural control and motor development. Physical therapy in pediatric patients with DS can improve sensorimotor functions. Eight studies on complications associated with DS and various treatments were reviewed, showing positive results. However, although there are promising interventions, the limited scientific evidence hampers their clinical application. It is concluded that hypotonia significantly impacts quality of life and requires a multidisciplinary therapeutic approach.
