Down Syndrome and Hypotonia

  • Identification data

    Identifier:  TFG:8574
    Authors:  Casanova Salvatierra, Amaia
    Abstract:
Trisomy 21, or Down syndrome (DS), is a genetic disorder that affects various bodily systems, with hypotonia being common. This latter interferes with postural control and motor development. Physiotherapy in pediatric patients with DS can improve sensorimotor functions. Eight studies on complications associated with DS and various treatments were reviewed, showing positive results. However, despite promising interventions, limited scientific evidence hinders their clinical application. It is concluded that hypotonia significantly impacts quality of life and requires a multidisciplinary therapeutic approach.
