    Abstract:
ABSTRACT: The psychiatric pathology known as “dual diagnosis” within the same individual patient refers to the co-occurrence of both, the consumption of toxic substances as wll as having a previously diagnosed psychiatric disorder. These patients with psychiatric co-morbility suffer from a severe and complex symptomatology which is reflected in clinical and social perspectives. The symptoms are considered harder if compared with patients suffering from a unique disorder. This literature review discusses the most current scientific databases in order to identify the main models of treatments for dual diagnosis. In addition to that, we describe the advantages achieved and the most widely used medical procedure which is knowm as comprehensive treatment. Even the fact that the comprehensive approach is considered as the most efficient and effective treatment, it also presents a number of difficulties when it is put into practice. One of the most representatives is the resources required of the public health service. Nowadays, there is still a barrier of particular relevance in the current situation of the public mental health, therefore it is important for health professionals to be aware of this particular disease in order to work as a team and apply the most effective therapies to patients with this disease.
