Psychological vulnerability factors and neurobiological bases in Prolonged Grief Disorder: a literature review

Abstract:
Prolonged grief disorder (PGD) is characterized by persistent longing and intense preoccupation with the deceased person for at least 12 months after the loss. This systematic review analyzed psychological, neurobiological, and environmental factors associated with its development by selecting 16 studies. The main risk factors identified were low socioeconomic status, violent or unexpected losses, and high interdependence with the deceased. In addition, age, pre-existing fear or horror of the loss, attachment style, and coping strategies may influence the course of the disorder.
