Relationship between perceived parenting style, self-esteem, and non-suicidal self-injurious behaviors in adolescents and young adults

Abstract:
This study examines the relationship between perceived parenting style, self-esteem, and non-suicidal self-harm (NSSH) behaviors in adolescents and young adults. Results show that authoritarian and neglectful parenting styles were associated with a higher prevalence of NSSH, while participants with NSSH had significantly lower levels of self-esteem. Logistic regression indicated that higher self-esteem and higher perceptions of parental care were associated with a lower likelihood of NSSH. These results highlight the importance of family and emotional factors in understanding and preventing NSSH.
