Implications of mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress in Alzheimer's dementia: A systematic review

    Abstract:
    Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder in which mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress influence its development and progression. This study analyzes their role in the pathophysiology of AD, as well as their potential as biomarkers and therapeutic targets. The search was conducted in PubMed following PRISMA guidelines, and seven empirical studies were selected. The results link the accumulation of β-amyloid and hyperphosphorylated tau with energy disturbances, increased reactive oxygen species (ROS), oxidative damage, and calcium imbalance. In conclusion, the study confirms that both mechanisms are involved in the pathophysiology of AD and could constitute diagnostic and therapeutic targets.
