The Effect of Distractors on Decision-Making Under Uncertainty and Risk: The Moderating Role of ADHD Traits and Impulsivity

Abstract:
In a social context of increasing exposure to digital stimuli, this work explores the possible effect of environmental distractors on decision-making under uncertainty and risk, as well as the moderating role of impulsivity and ADHD traits. The Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) was administered to a sample of 95 university students under two experimental conditions: with distractors (visual and auditory) and without distractors. Likewise, the subjects' impulsivity and ADHD traits were assessed with the BIS-11 and ADHD-RS scales. The results reveal that the presence of distractors significantly increases the variability of decision patterns and alters the continuity of learning. Furthermore, the presence of ADHD symptomatology seems to attenuate the effect of distractors, while a higher degree of impulsivity causes greater vulnerability to distractors. This work demonstrates the importance of personality traits such as impulsivity and ADHD symptomatology, as well as distracting environmental conditions in the field of decision-making. Finally, the need for future studies that address these concepts with more representative samples and broader perspectives is highlighted.
