Title in different languages: Study of popular and informal commerce and the appropriation of public space. The case of Max Paredes, La Paz – Bolivia
Abstract: The most important cities in Latin America have been the expansion scenarios of the so-called informal businesses. In recent years, public space has been transformed into economic spaces, under multiple forms of use and appropriation. There are two categories that predominate in the analysis of commerce in Bolivia and in Latin America, the informal and the popular, this situation causes a constant dispute over public space, transforming it and generating situations of obstruction, disorder, dirt, informality and deterioration of the public space. urban image. The Max Paredes Macro district of the city of La Paz, due to its strong native mestizo cultural presence, concentrates a large number of merchants to which it attributes a powerful character of its own identity that is manifested in the form of occupation of public space. In this context, this research relates the force exerted by popular commerce and informal commerce through the appropriation of public space. Through structured surveys and direct observation, we seek to understand how an activity of a particular actor, such as the merchant, generates dynamics that determine the use of public space, so it will focus on the effects caused, the use, the appropriation and its transformation. In such a way that alternatives and strategies can be had, not only in favor of ordering and improving the quality of public space, but also in the well-being and quality of life of citizens.
