Abstract: Quality palliative care can benefit individuals living with a wide range of conditions such as dementia, Motor Neuron Disease (MND) and Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), yet there is significant evidence that those with terminal conditions other than cancer are less likely to be offered palliative care services. This results in unplanned treatment at the end of life which may be futile and not cost effective and leads to poor patient and family experiences. There is a need for more multi-disciplinary and client centred approaches that contribute to quality end of life care. Understanding the challenges that influence the delivery of end of life care can support professionals to develop effective responses to those challenges.
