Title in different languages: The Epigraphic Landscape at the forum of Tarraco during the Julio-Claudian period
Abstract: The analysis of inscribed monuments, with special attention to their original topographic contexts, is the essence of the concept of Epigraphic “Landscape”. The recent update of the Epigraphic Corpus of Tarraco, carried out by Prof. Géza Alföldy (CIL II2/14), represents an excellent starting point to develop proposals in this line. In addition, there are numerous works dedicated to define the features of the Epigraphic culture of Tarraco and their officinae lapidariae. Thanks to all these scientific tools and the results from the latest excavations at the colonia’s celeberrimus locus, an exhaustive study of the Epigraphic monuments erected in the Tarraco’s forum is presented. Chronologically, it has been selected the time of emergence of the Epigraphic culture par excellence, as a result of the “revolution” experienced in the time of Augustus. The aim is to define the types and users of Tarraco’s public epigraphy, taking into account not only the contents and forms of the texts but also supports, stone materials and their archaeological contexts. In this way, it will know closer the Epigraphic habit in the provincial capital of Hispania Citerior, with reference to its most emblematic public space.
