Abstract: This research project arises from the high percentage of Muslim women looked after during maternity care in Pius Hospital de Valls (PHV), in Tarragona, Spain. Observing their behaviour and noticing their feelings makes us wonder if the medical care we offer to them adapts to their needs. Without any doubt these needs are linked to their culture and in some aspects these needs can be very different from ours. Therefore, our medical care might be not satisfactory for them, as some issues that are important to these women are not taken into account. Observation and experiences prove that in some situations the necessary elements to meet the cultural needs of this social group are not available for healthcare professionals. This research project is aimed at identifying Muslim women needs during labour and birth in HPV, as well as their difficulties regarding the cultural shock, which is created by the differences between their family microsystem and the microsystem of the country where they live. Furthermore, this research is also aimed at finding out instruments that might make medical care easier in such situations. The hypothesis formulated here is weather current immediate postpartum procedures are appropriate for any culture or weather it is necessary to define a new approach. In this particular case, the question is weather a new approach for Muslim mothers is necessary to make it possible for nurses to finally offer optimal healthcare. Through a qualitative methodology this hypothesis will be tested using techniques like participant observation and interviews. After having conducted this analysis on Muslim women’s role and described her needs, it will be considered if there is a need for defining new medical care strategies based on Leininger model to overcome cultural barriers
