Development of an analytical method for the determination of formaldehyde in aqueous polymer emulsions using headspace, gas chromatography, and flame ionization and mass spectrometry detectors

    Abstract:
    An analytical method for the determination of formaldehyde in aqueous polymer emulsions has been developed and validated using derivatization with ethanol, static headspace injection (HS), and detection by gas chromatography with FID and MS detectors. The methodology avoids polymer interference and improves sensitivity compared to traditional methods such as HPLC-DAD with Nash reagent. The derivatization conditions have been optimized, and the main analytical parameters have been validated, demonstrating good linearity, precision, and robustness across different matrices.
