Forensic Relevance of Microcystin Detection: A comparative Analysis of Cross-Reactivity Factors, Toxicity Equivalency Factors and Inhibition Equivalency Factors

    Abstract:
    Microcystins (MCs) and nodularin are cyanotoxins requiring accurate detection for effective risk management. This study investigates cross-reactivity factors (CRFs) using a colorimetric immunoassay with magnetic beads and reviews toxicity equivalency factors (TEFs), inhibition equivalency factors (IEFs), and CRFs from literature. Optimal assay conditions include 10 µg/mL MC-LR conjugated and 1:2500 monoclonal antibody dilution. Variants like MC-RR and nodularin showed good immunoreactivity, while MC-LY and MC-LW had poor antibody recognition. Variability between values is attributed to diverse experimental parameters and suggest an important role of pharmacokinetics.
