Effectiveness of nutraceutical agents: Myo-inositol and selenium as complementary treatment for hypothyroidism

    Identifier:  TFM:2241
    Authors:  Díaz Chinchilla, María José
    Abstract:
This systematic review evaluated the efficacy of combination therapy with 600 mg of myo-inositol and 85 µg of selenium as adjunctive therapy for the management of subclinical and autoimmune hypothyroidism. Seven studies were analyzed (two randomized controlled trials, two retrospective observational studies, and three prospective observational studies), primarily involving adult women with hypothyroidism, with an intervention duration of six months. The results showed significant reductions in TSH levels (up to 50%), as well as in thyroid antibodies (TgAb, up to 61%, and TPOAb, up to 60%), demonstrating beneficial effects on hormonal regulation and thyroid autoimmunity. The myo-inositol and selenium combination showed greater efficacy than selenium monotherapy. However, free T3 and T4 levels did not show significant changes.
