    Abstract:
Recent changes in Europe’s crude oil supply, driven by geopolitical shifts and stricter regulations, have posed new challenges for refineries. These include increased contaminants, incompatible crude blends, and altered operating temperatures, all raising corrosion risks in overhead systems and leading to higher maintenance costs. Refineries are also focused to extract more products like kerosene, further impacting operations. A study of five European crude oil units found varying risks of salt formation and corrosion, even with similar crude types. Simulation-based analyses helped assess risk levels and evaluate current and alternative treatments to minimize corrosion and equipment failure.
