    Abstract:
This thesis presents the optimization of sludge dewatering at BASF Tarragona's WWTP, addressing inefficiencies from outdated centrifuges and reliance on drying beds. Alternative disposal methods were unsuitable due to heavy metal content, making landfill the only viable option. A filter press was identified as the optimal solution, achieving 39% dry solids, reducing sludge volume by 31%, and cutting operational costs. The project yielded an NPV of 2.55 million €, an 8-month payback, and 8 t CO₂eq/week reduction. A thermal conditioning stage using residual heat further enhanced performance, with a HAZOP confirming safety.
