Nutritional Prehabilitation in Pre-Surgical Patients with Esophagogastric and Liver Cancer

Abstract:
Malnutrition in cancer patients increases the risk of postoperative complications. Nutritional prehabilitation aims to facilitate recovery. The objective was to evaluate the implementation of nutritional prehabilitation in these patients. This was a retrospective observational study. Sociodemographic data and perioperative characteristics were analyzed. A progressive decrease in BMI and an increase in the percentage of weight loss were observed in relation to the severity of malnutrition. Likewise, it was observed that the greater the degree of malnutrition, the greater the level of preoperative supplementation; patients with severe malnutrition received the most supplementation. There were no differences in postoperative complications, a finding that could be attributed to the nutritional prehabilitation.
