Clinical and Nutritional Outcomes After Gastrostomy Placement at the Joan XXIII Hospital

Abstract:
Enteral nutrition is essential for patients unable to use the oral route, with gastrostomy being an indicated method for long-term support. This retrospective observational study evaluated the clinical and nutritional outcomes of 32 patients with gastrostomy (7 PEG, 23 PRG, 2 surgical) at Joan XXIII Hospital between 2022 and 2024. The majority presented with head and neck neoplasms. Complications occurred in 78.1% of cases—primarily gastrointestinal and local—but were not severe. Improvements were observed in anthropometric and biochemical parameters. The findings are consistent with the literature, although the need to optimize placement times and device follow-up is highlighted.
