  • Identification data

    Identifier:  TFM:400
    Authors:  Etxeberria Rodríguez, Jon
    Abstract:
Founded to fight in “The year of the four emperors”, the Legio VII Gemina carried out several missions and assignments through Hispania and the Roman Empire at large. One of them was the detachment of men to serve in the officium of the Legatus Augusti of the province of Tarraconensis whose headquarters was located at Tarraco. Based on the epigraphic evidence related to the legion it is possible to recreate the daily duties and responsibilities they assumed. These men had many years of service behind them and lots of experience at dealing with the administrative and justicial issues, which relates to the fact that it was a permanent and experienced group whose members could hope to gain promotions that could end in the rank of centurion. The development of these groups is linked with the professionalization of the roman army of the Early Roman Empire.
