Escaping the village': Sexile itineraries towards the city

  • Identification data

    Identifier:  TFM:464
    Authors:  Aragó Navarro, Bernat
    Abstract:
Sexile is a type of migration which is mainly motivated by sexual orientation. This research analyzes, through the ethnographic method, rural-urban sexual migrations in the context of Catalonia. The collective imagination concerning the village and city realities, as well as the demographic, social and cultural issues, has a significant influence in perpetuating this phenomenon. Social institutions such as family, biopower, sexual repression and the feeling of being controlled act as driving factors of these migrations. Nonetheless, visibility, the recognition of sexual and gender diversity, LGBT community’s settlements and the gay identity promoted by pink capitalism become authentic poles of attraction.
