Abstract: On May 31, 2019 there was a toxic leak in the Carburos Metálicos company located in the industrial estate of La Pobla de Mafumet (Tarragona). The petrochemical industry is one of the elements that most worries the inhabitants of this town. Applying a methodology based on surveys among the inhabitants of the municipality, before and after the chemical accident occurs, a study is carried out carrying out statistical and spatial analysis using a Geographic Information System. In this way, it is verified what is the degree of perception of the chemical risk of this locality before and after the event, which areas of the urban area have a greater and lesser perception of the risk and which are the elements that most disturb their neighbours. Among the most notable results is that after the chemical accident the perception of chemical risk in the municipality decreases, although the insecurity of living with petrochemicals has increased. There is also a great ignorance of the preventive measures to be taken in case of chemical emergency. Finally, a series of proposals are developed to try to reduce this perception of chemical risk, that this is the most adjusted to the possible reality and that the response of the population to an emergency is adequate by improving the information of the industrial complex towards population.
