Abstract: The framework of the present work is the last subject of my master’s degree called “Spatial Planning, Information, Tools and Methods”. Its main theme is the municipal waste generation in relation to the inhabitants and the tourists who visit the zone. Therefore, this is a work that generates links between spatial planning and sustainable development, while trying to quantify one of the resulting impacts of the tourism, which is waste generation. The studying area of this work is the central part of the “Costa Daurada”, which includes Salou, Cambrils and Vila-seca municipalities. It deals with a strip of the Catalan littoral which receives, every year, a big number of tourists who come here looking for the beach and the sun, and other appeals that this studying area offers them in this part of the coastal Tarragona province. The data used in this work has been extracted from the different organizations that depend on the government of Catalonia, such as the Catalonian waste agency (ARC) and the statistical institute of Catalonia (IDESCAT). In order to achieve the monthly scale data, three data petitions to the town halls of the municipalities that set up the studying area had been carried out. The data regarding to the tourists arrivals and the number of registered overnights have been handed over by the Tourism Observatory of the Costa Daurada. The results obtained allowed us to observe different questions. Among these questions, the influence of the tourism on the municipal waste generation that allowed to perceive the seasonal rise due to the tourists arrivals. It has been possible to determine the periods in which the generation has shown a rise or a stabilization; and, furthermore, it has been possible to determine the municipal waste generation per capita taking into account the tourists that stayed overnight in the studying area, as well as the visualization of the changes in terms of municipal waste generation due to the implementation of the selective waste collection systems in the municipalities. To conclude, it is important to add that changes in the monthly generation of the solid waste of the resident people have been observed.
