Title in different languages: Therapeutic exercise as a treatment of physiotherapy in patients with gonarthrosis: a systematic review
Abstract: INTRODUCTION. Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease associated with aging. Knee is one of the joints most affected by osteoarthritis and the symptoms it produces are pain, lower limb misalignment, joint deformity, decreased joint mobility and / or stiffness, joint effusion, alteration of normal joint function, weakness muscle, functional disability and crepitus. Therapeutic exercise (TE) could be considered a good physical therapy treatment in patients with osteoarthritis of the knee. OBJECTIVES. To examine the efficacy of TE as a treatment to achieve a significant improvement in the characteristic symptoms of gonarthrosis. METHODOLOGY. The bibliographic search was performed between January and March 2020 in the Pubmed and Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro) databases. Clinical trials and controlled clinical trials were included. The quality of each study was assessed using PEDro scale and the risk of bias using the principles proposed by the Cochrane Bias Methods Group. RESULTS. Ten studies with a total of 624 participants were included. The methodological quality of the studies ranged from 4 to 7 out of 10 on the PEDro scale. The studies reviewed found significant intragroup differences in some of the TE interventions, compared to TE with control group and in comparisons between different types of ET in terms of improvement in pain, mobility, muscle strength, functionality and / or quality of life. CONCLUSIONS. TE is an effective treatment to treat the characteristic symptoms of gonarthrosis. It is concluded that the most effective TE for the physiotherapeutic treatment of gonarthrosis is based on the combination of different types of ET combined in a program that must consist of cycling, strength exercises, isometrics, agility and coordination exercises, balance and stretching.
