Title in different languages: Project: The effects of the implementation of a dysphagia test protocol in a stroke unit
Abstract: ABSTRACT Nursing protocols guide in the execution of techniques, reduce variability in patients’ care and as they are evidence-based, improve patients’ security. Some studies suggest that following a protocol for the dysphagia test could reduce the incidence of pneumonia and other complications related to that test. The present study aims to assess the effects of the implementation of a dysphagia test protocol in the Stroke Unit of Santa Creu and Sant Pau Hospital in Barcelona. For this purpose, a two phases pre-experimental study will be done in which 1080 dysphagia tests will be performed. The first phase (540 tests) will collect data about the current way in which the test in carried out, including whether the nurses feel the need to have a protocol, the variability in executing the test and the associated complications. The second phase (also 540 tests) will collect the personnel satisfaction regarding the implantation of the protocol and, again, the variability in executing the test and the associated complications. This study will allow the implantation of a protocol proved to be beneficial in the Stroke Unit of our hospital, considered a basic requirement of the National Health System’s strategic stroke management. Key words: CVA, complications, dysphagia, stroke, protocol, dysphagia test.
