    Authors:  Martí i Pérez, Xavier
    Abstract:
Forensic genetics, like any other forensic science, requires a specific set of conditions when updating the analysis instrumental. It is becoming increasingly likely that the current methods, a combination of PCR with capillary electrophoresis, and Sanger sequencing, will be replaced with more modern sequencing technologies. In this project, the advantages that Next-Generation Sequencing would provide, as well as the current limitations because of which it has not been implemented yet, are explained. The main novel applications that the incorporation of this technology would either allow or upgrade are also shown: tissue identification, molecular autopsy, prediction of physical characteristics and improvements in genealogic studies. Finally, the advances and potential use of cutting-edge sequencing in genetic profiling, and other new technologies, parallel or complementary to the used analysis methods, are discussed.
