    Abstract:
The Grammaire polyglotte by the German scholar Simon Jost, was published in Paris in 1840. At a time when the teaching of modern languages was spreading across Europe, Jost adopted a thoroughly practical viewpoint and considered learning languages a sing of modernity. On the other hand, he never renounced his primarily philosophical¿historical stand, according to witch languages are the vehicles for the transmission ¿of ideas and culture¿, a point proved by the fact that he included Hebrew in his multilingual grammar.
