    Abstract:
The analysis of the consumption of nutrients (24 hour recall) by a representative sample of the town of Reus revealed an energy intake higher than recommended in children and adolescents up to 17 years. The probability for the study subjects to ingest lower amounts of nutrients than the assumed needs was also calculated, so as to detect better defined risks groups than using the simple comparison with the recommended allowances. As regards proteins, the groups at highest risk were women aged 18-34 years (7%) and 35-64 years (9%). In the study population there was a remarkably high intake of monoinsaturared fatty acids (MUFA), energy excess in the form of lipids between 2 and 8 years and individuals older than 18, as compared with the recommended allowances, and a low P/S ratio (0,2-0,5) in all ages. In families with higher educational and social status the intake of animal proteins, lipids, SFA, MUFA and percentage of energy intake in the form of lipids were higher. With lower educational status of the mother the amount of carbohydrates increased.
