Women's entrepreneurship in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), motivated by necessity, has high activity rates and is promoted by public policy as a way to overcome poverty, but scientific production is sparse and largely gender biased. In subsistence contexts, the question is what benefits entrepreneurship actually provides for women. In this thesis, I examine women's entrepreneurial activity by considering the characteristics of their environment and context from a gender perspective. The study combines a micro-social approach, which refers to the perceptual factors of women entrepreneurs, with a macro-social approach, which includes the contextual determinants of the region as an emergent economy. Conclusions are addressed some of the existing gaps in the literature, such as the issues raised in various studies about the role of empowerment in women's entrepreneurship. And in terms of the need to present a shared vision of a micro- and macro-social approach, I show how both are articulated through this gender perspective that links them together. With all of this in mind, and in line with other expert voices in the field, this study demonstrates the need to incorporate gender mainstreaming into entrepreneurship research and programs aimed at promoting entrepreneurship.
