Abstract:
This doctoral thesis demonstrates that perception studies can play a vitally important role in obtaining information directly from the users of a Protected Natural Area (PNA, or Espacio Natural Protegido in Spanish). These studies provide added value by confirming that the user can both obtain and identify the characteristics, realities, and needs of the natural area, integrating the geography of place with human perception through the use of Public Participation Geographic Information Systems (PPGIS, the method used to obtain georeferenced information). The primary objective of this research was to evaluate the perceptions of visitors and the local population regarding the landscape, public use, and recreational activities at PNAs, in this case the Ebro Delta Natural Park (Parc Natural del Delta de l’Ebre). The fundamental theory applied, derived from the basic needs of activities within a PNA, employs Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and uses interactive cartography to analyse perception. To design the PPGIS method, a system of indicators was first created, along with an online interactive cartography platform. Further information was compiled from a review of previous studies, interviews, and fieldwork. Next, the method was applied, the sample was analysed, and the database was processed in order to clean it up. Finally, thematic maps were constructed and a spatial perception analysis performed, along with statistical and qualitative analyses of the data. The results from applying the PPGIS method enabled the study of 4,467 perception ratings produced by 276 participants: 15.1% of these were from residents living near the study area (residing in Camarles, l’Aldea, l’Ampolla, Amposta, Sant Carles de la Ràpita, and Sant Jaume d’Enveja), and the other 84.9% were from visitors. The proposals focus on two facets: the first phase emphasises the use of interactive geospatial techniques; and the second phase is oriented towards the management of the park studied. This made it possible to confirm the initial hypothesis advanced regarding the advantages of the PPGIS method, as well as verify that users of the Ebro Delta Natural Park appreciate it for its natural value and tranquillity. Their favourite recreational activities are taking photographs, relaxation, and contemplation.
