Abstract:
In a scenario of growing urbanization, it is necessary for local governments to have better tools for managing citizen needs, safeguarding the efficiency of their investments in the urban environment. In this context, public and open spaces (such as squares, green areas, waterfronts and parks) require particular attention, since their quality has proven to generate a virtuous relationship with the sustainable development of cities and the well-being of their population. Despite their importance, methods to evaluate the quality of the urban environment considering the perception of citizens are still inefficient. However, old theories such as urban perception, together with the emergence of recent digital platforms, such as Geographic Information Systems for Public Participation (GIS) have opened new lines of experimentation and research to renew communication channels between citizens and institutions. From this basis, the study develops a scope review to systematize subjective indicators, and operationalizes them through the construction of a SIGPP and the design of a methodology to participatively evaluate: (1) public spaces associated with the perception of fear and care, and (2) open spaces providers of cultural ecosystem services
