Qajar era: The Qajar era was a period of significant transition that laid the groundwork for changes in the status of women in Iranian society. While the era was marked by a blend of tradition and modernity, the impacts on women's societal roles were nuanced and complex. Advances in education, political activism, and the arts provided avenues for challenging traditional norms, yet these changes were incremental, reflecting the deep-seated patriarchal values of the time. The legacy of the Qajar period for women's status in Iran is one of gradual evolution amidst persistent challenges, highlighting the enduring struggle for gender equality.
Pahlavi era: The First and Second Pahlavi eras marked significant transformations in cultural and social realms. During this period, women in the field of arts began to assert themselves more prominently, gradually consolidating their position in this domain. Politically and economically, these eras are recognized as periods of substantial changes in women's rights and participation.
Political and economic transformations during this period empowered women to have more active and influential roles in the artistic domain, being recognized as essential and impactful contributors to the artistic community. Additionally, women during this era witnessed increased presence in leadership positions. With improved access to professional and educational opportunities, women played more significant roles in the production and management of artistic affairs.
Islamic Republic: After the Islamic Revolution in 1357, Iranian female artists faced new challenges and opportunities. The conservative society, male-dominated power structures, and the social and legal systems of the Islamic Republic imposed restrictions on women, especially in lower and middle-class and rural areas. During this period, female artists encountered limitations in expressing their artistic creativity. Nevertheless, research indicates that women in this era found various ways to express themselves in the artistic field.
