Origin and Possible Members of the “Malvasia” Family

  • Identification data

    Identifier:  TFG:10094
Authors:  Suárez De Abreu, Luis Ricardo
    Abstract:
The name “Malvasia” has long been linked to sweet or aromatic wines, though not to a specific grape variety. Up to 413 grape names are associated with it. This study analyzes 43 genetic profiles from the VIVC database using SSR markers and population structure tools, along with historical and geographic data. Results suggest that varieties best defining “Malvasia” are: (1) three by genetic proximity, (2) eight by hybrid origin, and (3) one by mutation. Others are excluded due to lack of genetic, historical, or geographic ties—except Malvasia istriana and Malvasia Župska, which remain tentative members of the group.
