    Abstract:
Abstract The work done consists of the development of a new method to differentiate the nature halogenated compounds, between organic and inorganic, contained in special residues intended to be incinerated in Constantí specialized plant, by a commercial selective cartridge and subsequent determination and quantification by XRF (X-Ray Fluorescence). The project scope is differentiating and quantifying which matrix is halogen in residue, that is, if it is found as halide or organic halogen. The study was only applied to chlorine, bromine and iodine. In studies conducted in various incinerators in the last 25 years, it has been described that the different nature of the halogen involves different ways out in the incineration process, suggesting that the halogenated inorganic residues accompany flying ashes while the halogenated residues of organic nature accompany flue gases. Subsequent treatment of these two streams entails costs and different problems at different stages of purification and final destination of the two currents. This is the reason why knowing the matrix in which the halogen is within the residue is so important in residue incineration. The first part of the work introduces the incineration of waste considering all these studies; and it continues with the theoretical foundations of X-Ray Fluorescence and the operation of spectrometer used. Moreover, it continues with the description of the two types of cartridges used in the tests. In the second part, there is an evaluation, through experimental tests, of the capacity to distinguish the nature of organic and inorganic halogenated compounds resulted from the use of the two different types of cartridges, named organic and inorganic cartridges. Finally, a possible initial protocol has been drafted from the results of the various tests and analysis of eight real samples. After performing various tests, the conclusion is that the organic cartridge is not valid for the purpose of the study.
