Abstract:
Our work can be included in sociolinguistics field, particularly in variation studies. The main objective of this study is the analysis of gender variation with focus on female genderlect. The objective of this work has been try to test our hypothesis that argues that the stereotypes associated with the female genderlect not always met in the language currently used by women. To achieve this objective, we have examined all the bibliography on genderlects; then it has been determined what characteristics have traditionally been attributed to female speech. On this basis, it was checked the current validity of the traits that have characterized women’s language; and finally, using data from oral interactions, we have tried to disprove that female speech is not sensitive, emotional, polite, soft, sweet, euphemistic, regulatory and conservative. Since the collection of oral interactions was difficult, we decided to use social networks, specifically Facebook. We collected data from 473 youth and 310 adults. The age range of those who have been tested goes between 19 and 65 years, and the time interval analyzed covers December 2014 to May 2015 Our analysis is organized into different linguistic levels, we have considered: phonetic orthography, morphology, vocabulary and pragmatics. It’s not considered the syntactic aspect because in the corpus collected no relevant differences between men and women are observed. The study confirms our hypothesis that defends that stereotypes that are associated with the female speech not always met in the language currently used by women.
