Abstract:
Life expectancy has increased in recent decades, leading to an increase in dependents who may need a primary informal caretaker at home. Stroke is the first cause of disability due to medical reasons, so there will be a large number of informal primary caregivers because of stroke. The caregiver is often a family member, with no experience in care and unpreparedness, who adopts a new role and sacrifices most of his time in caring for and meeting the needs of the dependent person. Care negatively affects the physical, psychological, social and emotional sphere of the person. Objectives: To deepen the experience after the stroke from the point of view of the primary informal caregiver. Method: Phenomenological qualitative descriptive study through semi-structured interviews with caregivers of a dependent person because of a stroke. Results: The most repeated emotions and feelings were sadness, loneliness, fear, feeling of guilt, anger and anguish. Conclusions: The experience of the main informal caregiver is often negative if it does not have sufficient knowledge or support. From nursing we must take care of the caregiver, provide support and resources to make this a less negative experience.
