Cannabis consumption and psychosis risk in adolescents and young adults: a bibliographic review

    Abstract:
    Cannabis use is widely spread among teenagers and its effects on mental health keep providing reasons for debate within the scientific community, even though it has been studied for many years. Objective. To analyse the recent scientific evidence with respect to the cannabis use and its relation with the first episode of psychosis in teenagers and young adults. Method. Bibliography review through a structured search in several databases, health websites and other search websites, from December 2017 to February 2018. Results. 13 articles have been analysed in total. From these, it has been found evidence that frequent cannabis use speeds the onset of the first episode of psychosis and, in addition, it increases vulnerability towards psychosis and the negative, affective, depressive and anxiety symptoms. Discussion and conclusions. the conducted research during the last years gives evidences about the prejudicial effects of frequent cannabis use in the onset and evolution of psychosis and it provides further support to promote prevention programmes among teenagers and young people.
