Ethical and legal aspects in palliative care

    Abstract:
    Introduction Currently, 40 millions of people needs palliative care. This is the reason why it is important to understand legal and ethical aspects which envolve palliative care. These aspects have a direct effect on making decisions as sedation or informed consent. All of these proccess have a significant impact on patient’s quality of life and relatives wellbeing. Objective To realize an exhaustive bibliographical search about legal and ethical aspects which affect patients who receive palliative care and their relatives. Methodology An exhaustive searching was realized on different data base; Pubmed, Google Academic, Cinahl, Cuiden, Web of Science and Scopus. Different manual searches were also added. Results The search generated 1506 results. Once inclusion/exclusion criteria were applied, a total of 18 articles were selected for this searching. Conclusions To encourage education about palliative care, to improve communication between health workers, family and the patient. To make visible the Informed Consent and advance directives; to break up with the conspiracy of silence and share the importance of sedation. In conclusion, to extend the information to citizens in order to improve terminal patient care and also achieve an optimal quality of life not only patients but also their families.
