    Abstract:
Introduction: Pain and dysfunction of the temporomandibular (DTM) joint is very frequent in our society, affecting about 17-26% of the population. The most sensitive population to DTM is mainly adolescents, children and women of childbearing age. Aims: To reaffirm the relationship between DTM and headaches, as well as to analyze the different current therapeutic approaches from the perspective of physiotherapy. Metodology: We performed a systematic review following the criteria of the PRISMA statement. The databases used for the search were Pubmed, PEDro and Cochrane Library. The search time ranged from 2012 to 2017. The searches were limited according to the inclusion criteria. Results: In the initial search, a total of 131 articles were found, of which 27 were included in this review. Of this total, 8 articles apply physiotherapy treatment in their intervention, 8 do not apply physiotherapeutic treatment during the intervention, and 11 do not perform any type of treatment. Conclusions: DTM is a pathology with a great number of associated medical conditions and a high risk of suffering other pathologies, including myofascial pain and/or headache. In the treatment of physiotherapy there is a greater tendency to apply conservative techniques, including self-care measures and an exercise program to perform at home as the most effective therapy of choice. Among the non-physiotherapeutic treatments we find pharmacotherapy and the use of occlusal devices as the most used treatments.
