    Abstract:
Nowadays, in vivo animal models and in vitro cell models are the basis for the discovery of new drugs and essential for the conduct of clinical trials. These, however, entail ethical problems such as experimentation with animals and difficulties in extrapolating the results to human conditions because of the differences between species. Instead, the combination of the modified tissues with biosensors, in organ-on-a-chip devices, allows to detect the cellular response to external stimuli mimicking the real environment of the tissue in vivo. The aim of this project has been the development of an electrochemical biosensor for the detection of interleukin-6 (IL-6) and of the tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) secreted in skeletal muscle by gold-screened electrodes with the idea of using them in the muscle-on-a-chip type device.
