Abstract:
Introduction: The stem cells extracted from umbilical cord blood (UCB) carry more advantages than those extracted from hematopoietic progenitors obtained from the bone marrow and/or peripheral blood. In our work we wanted to evaluate the knowledge about the donation of UCB. Methodology: It is a descriptive, transversal and prospective study with the purpose of determining the knowledge that pregnant women and their partners have about the donation of UCB in the Hospital Residencia Sant Camil (HRSC). The target population was the pregnant women and their partners who carried out the parental control to the HRSC. Since this work was a first approximation to the subject of study, it was considered to include the largest number of participants. The data was collected through an ad hoc survey between February 4 and March 8, 2019. The data obtained was explored through a template designed for this purpose with the Microsoft Excel ® computer program. Results: A total of 38 surveys were collected, of which 4 were rejected given that they did not meet the inclusion criteria, with the final sample of n=34 participants. Of all the questions regarding the knowledge of the UCB donation, there were 75.0% of correct answers, 20.4% of incorrect answers and 4.6% of unanswered questions. Conclusions: The main aspect known to the participants is related to a high level of knowledge regarding umbilical cord blood and its main uses, and the point where we have observed the greatest lack of knowledge has been in the compatibility of the SCU. Despite the good results obtained, half of the participants consider that there is not enough information on the subject.
