    Abstract:
Carbons with different Brønsted acidity and different amorphous contribution have been prepared from biomass from almond and hazelnut shells. Some carbons have also been supported on MK-10 clay and two of them have been modified by addition of V2O5 and MgO as acid and base of Lewis respectively. The catalytic behavior of several carbons with different properties, has been studied in the reaction to produce to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) from commercial glucose, catalyzed by acid sites. As characterization techniques, N2 physisorption, Raman, FT-IR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and acid titration were used. The catalyst supported on MK-10 clay at 10% glucose was the one that gave the highest yield to 5-HMF (76%). This catalyst was reused two more times, resulting in a loss of yield (28%) due to a Brønsted acidity decrease.
