    Abstract:
Abstract Blood cultures are the right laboratory test used to diagnose severe infections in patients. It’s a method which may sometimes arise some false positives results and it is not always based on scientific evidences. The aim of this study is to determine a critical analysis of the protocols for the blood culture draws in five hospitals of the area where the clinical practices of the University School of Nursing (Universidad de Enfermería Rovira i Virgili (URV)) have been done. This study is based on a protocol observation taking into account the definitions, the logical structure, the description, the details and the order. A bibliographical revision of the main strategies which have been proved to be efficient on the contamination reduction of the samples is also undertaken. The same happens with the guidelines which indicate the development of a correct protocol. The five protocols studied are compared and the result is also provided. The most significant aspects regarding the reduction of the contamination rate are: the use of the antiseptic, the total volume of the extraction sample, the use of sterile gloves, the draw of multiple samples, the disinfection of the rubber lid and the change of the needle prior to the inoculation of the samples into the bottles. Conclusion: The undertaken protocols do not prove the current scientific evidences. The most remarkable aspect to reduce the contamination index of the samples is the use of 2% Alcohol Chlorhexidine as a skin antiseptic. Key words: blood culture, contamination, guide, protocol.
