Abstract:
Abstract Objective: To analyze the experience of three different parents with ADHD children and the nursing professionals’ role in their children care. Design: A qualitative study with a phenomenological approach. Location: APYDA association located in Tarragona, between September 2014 and June 2015. Participants: A total of three parents with ADHD children. Method: All the information was obtained by the use of deeply semi-structured interviews. The data was analyzed through the grounded theory, which is based on the creation of thematic categories and their corresponding codes. After interpreting the information, the findings were compared with scientific studies with similar topics published by other authors. Results: The relevant topics were: mistaken previous knowledge about ADHD; behaviors and attitudes in common between the three children (lack of concentration and school failure, among others); existent fear and uncertainty due to the stigma, discrimination and social isolation; controversy regarding the need of pharmacology treatment; nonexistent nursing professionals’ role; essential family, social and professional support; different strategies taken at the moment of diagnosis (denial, liberation and confusion/bewilderment) and common changes after the diagnosis such as the establishment of patterns and rules. Conclusion: Many families with this problem lack the required resources to confront their day-to-day, a situation which could improve if there was an active intervention of nursing professionals providing support, information and help in taking decisions.
